What is a wen?

A wen is a noncancerous skin growth that typically appears as a small, firm bump under the skin. Wens are also known as sebaceous cysts or epidermoid cysts. They are usually filled with a white, cheesy material called sebum, which is produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin.

Wens are typically painless and slow-growing, and may appear on the face, neck, scalp, or back. They can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. Wens are usually harmless and do not require treatment, but they can be removed surgically if they become bothersome or unsightly.

It is important not to try to squeeze or pop a wen, as this can lead to infection or scarring. If a wen becomes red, swollen, painful, or starts to drain pus, it may be infected and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
